Tessier (1741-1837), French doctor and agronomist was sent by Necker in 1777 to Sologne to study the epidemics of ergotism which had been raging there for several years. This disease due to the development of ergot (fungus) on the ears of rye decimated herds and caused dry gangrene in Solognot peasants. Tessier therefore became a specialist in these diseases and entered the Academy of Sciences.
The supply of grains (wheat, barley, rye, oats ...) is a strategic problem of the end of the 18th century in France which will experience in particular the famines of 1776, 1782, 1788.
